Eventful April Includes Egg Hunt, Arbor Day Tree Dedication and Volunteer WERK Day

Community Egg Hunt

Memorial Park Fields

Wilsonville Parks and Recreation hosts the annual Community Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 20, 10 am at Memorial Park. Young egg hunters (ages 1-11) are divided into age groups and sent onto the field to gather the 15,000 eggs scattered around the ball fields.

The Parks and Recreation crew — with a little help from the Easter bunny — is dishing out several prizes, including gift baskets, to lucky participants. Don’t miss this springtime tradition.

There is no charge for this event. Parking near Memorial Park is limited; visitors should arrive early or consider SMART transit services.  

Arbor Day Heritage Tree Dedication

Arbor Day is the perfect day to celebrate two hard-working Wilsonville trees recently designated as Oregon Heritage Trees. The City and the Oregon Travel Information Council host a dedication celebration to celebrate two trees that — quite literally — bear the scars of the role they played in facilitating the success of Oregon’s logging industry.

From the mid-1800s until the 1980s, tugboat operators would use “cable trees” on the river’s edge to tie down log rafts until logs were scheduled to be delivered to the mill. Wire cables secured around the base of the trees left unmistakable proof of the work performed by these trees for more than a century.

The event features speakers to elaborate upon that history and demonstrates some tools of the trade including a tugboat — Rainbow B — that has been in operation on the Willamette River since 1937.

W.E.R.K. Day

The City’s 19th annual community park improvement and clean-up event returns on Saturday, April 27, 8 am-noon.

On Wilsonville Environmental Resource Keepers (W.E.R.K.) Day, volunteers join City employees to complete projects that prepare City parks for the busy summer season. Past projects have included painting soccer goals, placing bark chips on trails, rebuilding eroded trails, removing invasive species, and sanding and painting picnic tables.

“The City relies on the efforts of our W.E.R.K. Day crew to get our parks in shape for summer,” said Brian Stevenson, Parks & Recreation Program Manager. “We appreciate the families, friends and co-workers who join us each year for a fun morning doing meaningful work together.”

W.E.R.K. Day takes place rain or shine; anyone eight and older is welcome to participate. Long pants, work gloves, closed-toe shoes, water bottles and sunscreen are recommended. 

Volunteers check in and receive a free omelet breakfast, 8-9 am at the Wilsonville Community Center, complements of Wilsonville Rotary.
