Tree City USA Celebrates with Two Events This Saturday
April 15, 2024 – For the 26th straight year, the City of Wilsonville has achieved “Tree City USA,” a designation bestowed by the Arbor Day Foundation that reflects Wilsonville’s continued commitment to maintaining and promoting its urban forest.
To earn the coveted Tree City USA designation, a City must have a comprehensive urban forestry program consisting of a tree ordinance, a City department responsible for trees, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
“The Tree City USA designation is a badge of honor that we always wear proudly,” said Community Development Director Chris Neamtzu. “It’s a wonderful, symbolic reminder of our ongoing commitment to always be working to grow and protect Wilsonville’s trees.”
The City is celebrating with events that recognize two days on the April calendar – Earth Day and Arbor Day – that draw attention to the importance of protecting our trees.
Murase Plaza Arboretum Grand Opening
A new Memorial Park arboretum, designed with input from community members, is being celebrated with a grand opening event this Saturday, April 20, from 9:30 to 11 am at Murase Plaza’s pollinator garden. Coloring handouts and Arbor Day educational resources are being provided.
The new arboretum features trees with ties to significant historical events, such as the Moon Tree, the Peace Tree, and the Champion Oak. Built by the City’s Parks and Recreation staff, the arboretum was partially funded by a grant from the Wilsonville-Metro Community Enhancement Program.
Earth Day Celebration at CREST
Join the Center for Research in Environmental Sciences and Technologies (CREST), the Backyard Habitat Certification Program, and the City of Wilsonville for an Earth Day celebration this Saturday at CREST (11265 SW Wilsonville Rd.) from 10 am to 2 pm.
This year’s theme is “Neighbors with Nature;” attendees can engage with a variety of exhibitors dedicated to on environmentalism. Anyone who has wondered what they can do to be a great neighbor to the region’s open spaces and natural resources, won’t want to miss this event!
Family-friendly activities, prizes, and refreshments are being provided at this celebration of environmental stewardship and the land that connects us all. Parking provided at Boones Ferry Primary School.
